Indigenous Art: Can It Be Contemporary Without Already Being Modern? - October 5, Thursday
Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection / Second Street Gallery.
In Australia, Indigenous art burst on the contemporary art scene in the '80s without ever having been modern. It jumped from primitive art to contemporary art, catapulting some individuals from the pre-modern to the contemporary. One man, Warlimpirrgna Tjapaltjarri, walked out of the desert from a hunter-gatherer existence in 1984 and straight into the life of a professional artist. How can this phenomenon be explained? Ian McLean lectures. Second Street Gallery.  6pm.  $Free.  Email: kluge-ruhe@virginia.edu.. Reservations are required.  For details, please click this link.  For more info call: 244-0234.
