Charlottesville Welcome Book Fall 2017

Brewery Tours & Tastings

Thomas Jefferson wrote, “I am lately become a brewer for family use”; he took great pleasure in crafting his own beer at Monticello. And the tradition continues. Charlottesville's love of locally crafted beer thrives at our, award-winning microbrewers like Starr Hill, Devil's Backbone, South Street, Wild Wolf and Blue Mountain breweries. Here you can enjoy tours, beer tastings, live music and festivals. A local cidery uses Jefferson’s favorite apple, the Albemarle Pippin, to create its hard cider, rounding out the range of local, artisanal beverages. Be sure to visit the following breweries on your next trip to Charlottesville.

Devils Backbone Brewing Company

Named the 2012 Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival and the 2010 World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster Small Brewpub, Devils Backbone Brewing Company produces fresh and original craft beer paired with a traditional menu touched with southwestern flavors. With a cozy lodge style atmosphere including outdoor dining in the Blue Ridge mountains of Nelson County, this is the place for fun. View www.dbbrewingcompany.com for our children's menu, local music acts and special events.

James River Brewery

Awarded with two medals (Gold and Bronze) at the 2015 Virginia Beer Cup, James River Brewery is located in a 19th century brick tobacco warehouse in small-town, historic Scottsville, Virginia. Scottsville’s three Valley Street restaurants deliver food to the brewery, so you could relax in the beer garden alongside Mink Creek or in the taproom and enjoy burgers, pizza, barbeque or seafood while drinking JRB beer or ale. We have live on music most weekends, so check out our Events calendar and plan a visit.
